LONDON — Queen Camilla has spoken publicly for the first time about the emotional struggle of keeping King Charles' initial cancer diagnosis secret from the public. Speaking in a video released Wednesday for the cancer support charity Maggie's, the Queen revealed the immense personal strain of remaining silent during her visits with other affected families before Buckingham Palace officially announced the monarch's health condition.
The First Public Confession
According Reuters ,The emotional admission stems from a visit Camilla made to a Maggie's cancer support centre at a London hospital in early 2024, just days before the royal family went public with the news. As president of the charity, she found herself comforting patients while carrying her own heavy secret.
"I remember coming to see a Maggie's just after the King being diagnosed. Nobody could say anything at the time, that was quite difficult," Camilla told Laura Lee, chief executive of Maggie's. "I almost said something but, you know, I felt that it wasn't the time to say. I was just longing to let it out, but obviously I couldn't."
She added that witnessing the resilience of other patients and their families underscored the vital need for dedicated support networks during health crises.
King Charles' Determination During Treatment
Buckingham Palace first announced in February 2024 that the 75-year-old monarch was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. While the King continues his medical care, effective intervention allowed doctors to scale back his treatment schedule late last year.
Throughout his recovery, Camilla noted that her husband remained steadfast in fulfilling his state duties:
Relentless Work Ethic: "Look at my husband, nothing stopped him," Camilla said, referring to his determination to keep working.
Personal Resilience: "He just said, 'This is my way I'm going to cope with it.'"
The "Royal Effect" on Public Awareness
The openness of both King Charles and Kate, the Princess of Wales—who also underwent cancer treatment—has sparked a massive surge in public awareness and support-seeking behavior across the UK.
"The King's openness about his diagnosis has undoubtedly helped others to be more open themselves," said Laura Lee. "To now hear the Queen's completely understandable and natural response as a wife shines a light on why it is so important that family and friends also get the support they need."
The newly released film marks the 30th anniversary of Maggie's, an organization dedicated to providing free practical and emotional support to people with cancer and their loved ones.
