KYIV, Ukraine — A deadly Russian ballistic missile attack killed 12 people and injured more than 30 in Kyiv early Thursday, damaging residential structures and severing power to tens of thousands of homes.
The primary strike hit the city's Solomianskyi district, destroying the upper floors of a nine-story residential building and killing seven residents. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that Friday will be observed as an official day of mourning as emergency crews work through the rubble.
Capital Infrastructure Damaged in Wave of Explosions
According to Reuters,The attack triggered massive blazes and impacted multiple neighborhoods across the capital. Non-residential facilities, warehouses, a local school, and a children's hospital all reported physical damage following a series of over a dozen rapid explosions.
Power company DTEK confirmed that approximately 90,000 homes initially lost electricity, though emergency crews have since restored power to over half of those affected. In the broader Kyiv region, local officials reported one additional fatality.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated the operation utilized airstrikes and drones targeting facilities producing drone components, military depots, and logistics hubs. Moscow continues to leverage Ukraine's acute shortage of interceptor missiles to intensify air assaults on strategic locations.
The strike also spilled over Ukrainian borders, with NATO and EU member Romania confirming a drone crashed on its territory, while neighboring Moldova reported an unauthorized drone crossing its airspace.
Meanwhile, diplomatic breakthroughs remain out of reach. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy recently submitted peace proposals to U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. However, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Moscow has not yet received specific proposals for new high-level talks, though it remains open to meeting on short notice.
