ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Japan have officially committed to strengthening their long-standing bilateral cooperation within the petroleum sector, placing a specific strategic focus on geosciences and mineral research.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Mr. Ali Pervaiz Malik welcomed the Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, H.E. Akamatsu Shuichi, during a high-profile diplomatic visit to the Geoscience Advance Research Laboratories (GARL) of the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP). The meeting underscored over a century of scientific collaboration and outlined a clear roadmap for future resource exploration.
During the walkthrough, Minister Malik expressed profound gratitude for the continuous financial and structural support provided by the Government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), describing the establishment of GARL as a landmark scientific milestone between the two nations.
Modernizing Pakistan’s Mining Infrastructure
Speaking to the delegation, Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik revealed that Pakistan is aggressively upgrading its entire domestic mineral sector to align with global standards.
The federal government is actively working to dismantle primitive extraction and exploration practices, replacing them with cutting-edge technologies to guarantee environmental sustainability, boosted industrial productivity, and higher value addition for mined commodities.
To mark the progress of this partnership, a short documentary mapping the history, technological evolution, and current capabilities of GARL was screened for the dignitaries, followed by an interactive laboratory tour where officials engaged directly with GSP scientists.
Expanding Scientific Workflows and JICA Engagement
Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi praised Pakistan's persistent efforts to reinforce its scientific infrastructure and reaffirmed Tokyo's commitment to expanding technical exchange programs.
Both leadership factions expressed complete satisfaction with the ongoing technical synchronization between the GSP and JICA, noting that future joint ventures will prioritize several critical sub-sectors:
Advanced Analytical Sciences: Refining mineral identification and high-tech mapping.
Laboratory Methodologies: Harmonizing testing procedures with international certifications.
Technical Capacity Development: Upskilling Pakistani geologists and laboratory researchers through specialized exchange programs.
The high-level meeting concluded with a mutual pledge to secure future investments in petroleum and mineral extraction, observed by senior officials from the Petroleum Division, the Geological Survey of Pakistan, the Embassy of Japan, and the JICA Pakistan Office.
