Kathmandu authorities have apprehended Nepal’s former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli following allegations of his involvement in a deadly Nepal protest crackdown that claimed the lives of 77 individuals last year. The arrest occurred early Saturday morning, marking a significant development in the aftermath of the youth uprising.
High-Profile Arrests in Kathmandu
Police confirmed the detention of the three-time former prime minister at his residence located in the capital city of Kathmandu. Simultaneously, his former home affairs minister, Ramesh Lekhak, was also taken into custody in connection with the same investigation.
These arrests stem from an extensive inquiry into the state's response to widespread demonstrations that ultimately led to the collapse of Oli's government. (according to Reuters)
Uprising Sparked by Social Media Ban
The protests, which began in September of last year, were primarily an anti-corruption youth uprising initially triggered by a brief ban on social media platforms. Demonstrators, largely from Generation Z, took to the streets to voice their grievances against governmental policies and perceived corruption. (according to BBC News)
The movement quickly escalated, leading to a violent confrontation between protestors and state forces, resulting in the tragic loss of dozens of lives before Oli’s administration was eventually toppled.
