Top officials within the Trump administration are vocally condemning CNN’s recent Iran war coverage, specifically questioning its reporting on potential threats in the critical Strait of Hormuz. This public rebuke has ignited a fresh dispute between the White House and the prominent news network, focusing on journalistic independence and factual accuracy.
Administration Blasts CNN's Iran War Coverage
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth launched a direct attack on the network during a press conference focused on US military operations against Tehran. He labeled CNN's story, which suggested Washington had underestimated Iran's capacity to disrupt global oil traffic, as "patently ridiculous." Hegseth also expressed a desire for an "actual patriotic press," and voiced his hope for a change in CNN's ownership, stating, "The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better."
David Ellison, head of Paramount Skydance, is reportedly set to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN's current parent company. His father, Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, a known ally and financial supporter of former President Donald Trump, largely funded this prospective takeover. Ellison had previously committed to upholding CNN's editorial independence.
Echoing these sentiments, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also sharply criticized the CNN report concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international waterway. Leavitt declared the story "100 percent FAKE NEWS" in a post on X. She asserted that the Pentagon has developed plans for Iran's potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz for decades, well before current operations were initiated.
CNN Defends Its Reporting Amidst Criticism
In response to the administration's accusations, CNN chief Mark Thompson firmly defended the network's journalistic integrity. Thompson stated that CNN's "only interest is in telling the truth to our audiences in the US and around the world." He emphasized that "no amount of political threats or insults is going to change that" commitment.
This latest clash follows a pattern of strained relations between the Trump administration and CNN. Former President Trump has frequently criticized CNN reporters, including anchor Kaitlan Collins, over their coverage and questioning style, often alleging bias against his administration.
