ISLAMABAD — Residents of Islamabad’s Christian colonies gathered today to pay tribute to Pakistan’s diplomatic role in promoting global peace, while simultaneously appealing to the government to protect their homes from local administrative crackdowns.
Former Federal Minister J. Salik led a joint prayer ceremony and rally across the Rimsha, Miskeen, and Musharraf colonies. The event centered on Pakistan’s recent mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, a role Salik described as a "source of pride for the entire nation."
Praise for Pakistan’s Global Diplomatic Stature
Addressing a large crowd of residents, including many women and children, J. Salik highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful foreign policy. He noted that:
Mediation Success: Pakistan’s constructive role in de-escalating regional tensions has received international acclaim.
Economic Impact: The ongoing conflicts between Iran, the US, and Israel have spiked global oil prices by 25 to 30 percent, causing ripple effects in Pakistan’s economy.
Conflict Prevention: Pakistan’s diplomatic strategy is seen as a vital effort to prevent a major global crisis that could have devastating social and political consequences.
Call for Internal Consistency
Despite the praise for foreign policy, the rally took a serious tone regarding local issues. J. Salik issued a direct appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, urging them to extend the same principles of peace and protection to the residents of Islamabad's slums.
He expressed deep concern over the Capital Development Authority's (CDA) actions against these settlements, stating:
"While Pakistan is promoting peace globally, displacing its own citizens is against the principles of human rights and compassion. Depriving thousands of families of their homes creates a humanitarian crisis that contradicts our international message."
Rally for Rights
The rally in Rimsha Colony served as a platform to warn that the forced displacement of citizens could send a negative message to the international community. Participants emphasized that internal stability and the welfare of the poor are just as critical as external diplomatic successes.
The ceremony concluded with special prayers for Pakistan’s security, economic stability, and the promotion of global peace, with a specific plea for the protection of the marginalized communities living in the capital’s katchi abadis.
