THATTA — Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev, accompanied by senior officials from the Russian Embassy and Consulate General, conducted a high-profile cultural mission across Sindh on April 2, 2026. The visit aimed to deepen diplomatic ties through a shared appreciation of Pakistan’s diverse archaeological wealth, ranging from the intricate Chaukundi Tombs to the sprawling Makli Necropolis, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Retracing the Footsteps of Afanasy Nikitin
A primary highlight of the tour was the delegation’s visit to the ancient port city of Banbhore. This site holds a unique position in Russia-Pakistan relations, as it is believed to have been visited in the 15th century by the famed Russian merchant and traveler Afanasy Nikitin.
Arriving on the subcontinent around 1470—decades before the voyage of Vasco da Gama—Nikitin documented the region’s culture in his seminal work, Journey Beyond the Three Seas. By visiting Banbhore, Ambassador Khorev symbolically connected modern diplomacy with centuries of historical contact between the two regions.
Architectural Marvels and Archaeological Progress
The diplomatic delegation also received detailed briefings on ongoing excavations and preservation efforts at several key locations:
Shah Jahan Mosque: A 17th-century masterpiece in Thatta, celebrated for its complex tile work and unique acoustic architecture.
Banbhore Excavations: Explorations at this medieval site, where the first mosque in South Asia is believed to have been constructed following the arrival of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim in the 8th century.
Makli Necropolis: One of the largest funerary sites in the world, offering a window into the Sufi traditions and royal history of the region.
A Deeper Insight into Pakistan’s Heritage
The visit provided the Russian diplomats with a comprehensive overview of Sindh’s historical evolution, from ancient maritime trade to Islamic architectural peaks. Ambassador Khorev noted that understanding Pakistan's cultural heritage and natural wealth is essential for fostering a respectful and enduring bilateral partnership. The mission underscores a growing interest in cultural diplomacy as a means to strengthen ties between Moscow and Islamabad.
