A 22-year-old Russian national, Matvei Rumiantsev, was sentenced to four years in prison at London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday following a violent assault that involved an unexpected witness: Barron Trump. The son of the U.S. President alerted British authorities after witnessing the attack on a female friend during a live video call on January 18, 2025.
During the trial, the court reviewed transcripts of the emergency call made by the now 19-year-old Trump. "I’m calling from the US, I just got a call from a girl… she’s getting beat up," Trump told UK police, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He later described the video call as "brief" but "prevalent," providing the critical intervention that the victim believes saved her life.
Convictions and Sentencing
According to CNN, Rumiantsev was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and perverting the course of justice. The latter charge stemmed from a letter Rumiantsev wrote to the victim from prison, demanding she withdraw her allegations. Despite being cleared of charges related to rape and intentional strangulation, the judge handed down a four-year custodial sentence for the confirmed offenses.
Jealousy Over Social Media Friendship
The court heard that the conflict was fueled by Rumiantsev’s "jealousy" regarding the victim's friendship with Barron Trump. The two had reportedly met via social media, a connection that Rumiantsev admitted caused a dispute in late 2024.
