The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has urged internet users to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard their online accounts and personal information from increasing cyber threats.
In a recent advisory, the regulator highlighted the importance of activating two-factor authentication (2FA) on digital platforms, including social media networks, online banking services, and email accounts. According to PTA, this additional security layer can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
The authority advised users to create strong and unique passwords for every online account rather than reusing the same credentials across multiple platforms. It noted that weak or predictable passwords remain a major cause of account compromises and data breaches.
PTA recommended avoiding passwords that contain personal details such as names, birth dates, or phone numbers, as these can be easily guessed by cybercriminals. Users were also cautioned never to share their passwords with others.
To further strengthen account security, the regulator encouraged citizens to update their passwords periodically and make use of biometric authentication options, including fingerprint and facial recognition technologies, whenever available.
The advisory comes at a time when incidents of cyber fraud, phishing scams, and identity theft are becoming increasingly common both in Pakistan and around the world. Cybersecurity specialists continue to identify weak passwords as one of the most exploited vulnerabilities in online attacks.
PTA emphasized that improving public awareness is essential for building a safer digital ecosystem. The authority urged citizens to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their personal and financial information.
According to the regulator, following basic cybersecurity practices can play a vital role in preventing online fraud and reducing the risk of sensitive data being compromised.
