In a major milestone for agricultural research, the National Center for Livestock Breeding, Genetics and Genomics (NCLBG&G) at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpinidi (PMAS-AAUR) hosted Pakistan’s first national symposium titled “Transforming Livestock Through Genomics” at its Rawat facility. The event brought together experts from all four provinces and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to explore modern genomic tools for improving livestock breeds and securing national food supplies.
ice Chancellor Highlights Genomic Selection and Dairy Yield Potential
Presiding over the symposium as Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman expressed appreciation for Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Prof. Ahsan Iqbal for his foundational support in establishing NCLBG&G.
Dr. Zaman emphasized that the center’s advanced laboratories and genomic selection technologies present unprecedented opportunities to refine local livestock breeds, increase dairy yields, and boost farmer incomes.
Nationwide Network to Bridge Scientific Research and Rural Farming
Central Project Director Dr. Ghulam Bilal briefed participants on NCLBG&G’s mandate, detailing how the national center operates across seven sub-centers throughout Pakistan and AJK.
The symposium featured specialized technical sessions and an exhibition highlighting modern
agricultural and livestock technologies:
Genomic Selection Technology: Introducing precision breeding tools to accelerate genetic gains in local cattle and buffalo breeds.
National Research Platform: Connecting scientists, policymakers, and industry partners to translate laboratory findings into farm-level solutions.
Exhibition Stalls: Showcasing modern livestock equipment, feed solutions, and diagnostic tools.
Consultative Panels: Structuring collaborative R&D roadmaps to support livestock producers nationwide.
Celebrating World Egg Day and Strengthening Poultry Sector Awareness
In conjunction with the symposium, PMAS-AAUR’s Institute of Animal Sciences celebrated World Egg Day to highlight the role of poultry products in rural food security.
Faculty members and students hosted awareness sessions underscoring eggs as an essential, affordable nutrient source, emphasizing the critical link between poultry sector development and public health across Pakistan.
