I recently attended eCommerce Expo London 2026 at ExCeL London as a technology journalist. The event brought together people from the eCommerce, technology, retail, marketing and business sectors to discuss how online shopping and digital technology are changing.
As soon as I entered the exhibition, it was clear that eCommerce has become much bigger than simply selling products online. Technology is now involved in almost every part of the customer journey, from finding a product to making a payment and receiving an order.
A busy event focused on technology
The event attracted thousands of visitors and included many companies showing their latest products and services.
Walking around the exhibition, I saw businesses working in areas such as artificial intelligence, online payments, customer experience, marketing, data, delivery and automation.
There were also presentations and discussions from people working in some of the biggest technology and retail companies.
For me, this made the event a useful opportunity to understand what businesses are currently focusing on and where eCommerce could be heading in the future.
Artificial intelligence was a major topic
One of the biggest topics at the event was artificial intelligence (AI).
AI is already changing the way businesses communicate with customers and manage their online operations. Companies are using it to understand customer behaviour, improve marketing, answer questions and provide more personalised experiences.
What I found interesting was that the conversation around AI has changed.
A few years ago, many businesses were talking about AI as something new and experimental. Now, companies are looking at how they can actually use it in their day-to-day work.
There were also discussions around how AI could change the way people search for and buy products online.
This could become very important in the future. Instead of searching through many different websites, customers may increasingly use AI tools to find products, compare options and make decisions.
The customer experience is changing
Another thing that stood out to me was the focus on customer experience.
Customers expect online shopping to be quick and easy. They want websites that work well, simple payment options, accurate information and reliable delivery.
Businesses therefore have to think about the complete customer experience, rather than just their online shop.
Technology can help companies understand what customers want and provide more relevant information and recommendations.
However, businesses also need to be careful about how they use customer data. Personalisation can be useful, but customers also want their personal information to be protected.
So much technology, but choosing the right one matters
There were many technology companies at the exhibition, each offering different products and services.
This made me think about one important question: Do businesses really need all this technology?
Having more technology does not automatically make a business better.
Companies need to understand what problem they are trying to solve before investing in a new system. They also need to consider whether a new technology will work with their existing systems and whether it will actually improve the customer experience.
For smaller businesses in particular, choosing the right technology can be more important than choosing the newest technology.
Payments and delivery remain important
Although AI and other new technologies received a lot of attention, some of the basics of eCommerce remain extremely important.
Payments and delivery are good examples.
Customers want secure and simple ways to pay, while they also expect their orders to arrive on time.
Behind every successful online purchase there are systems working in the background to process payments, manage stock, organise orders and arrange delivery.
The event showed how technology is helping businesses improve these areas.
My experience as a technology journalist
For me, attending eCommerce Expo London 2026 was a valuable experience.
It was interesting to see how quickly technology is changing the way businesses sell and communicate with customers.
The event also showed that the future of eCommerce will not depend on one technology alone.
AI will certainly be important, but businesses will also need good data, secure payment systems, reliable delivery, strong customer service and, most importantly, an understanding of what customers actually need.
What I took away from the event is that technology should not simply be used because it is new or popular. It should be used when it can solve a real problem and make things easier for businesses and customers.
Looking to the future
eCommerce Expo London 2026 gave me a good view of where the industry is going.
AI is becoming part of everyday business, customer expectations are increasing, and companies are looking for better ways to use technology.
The next few years could bring major changes to online shopping. We may see AI playing a much bigger role in how people search for products, make purchasing decisions and communicate with businesses.
After attending the event, one thing is clear to me: eCommerce is changing quickly, and technology will continue to play a major role in that change.
