The Embassy of Romania in Pakistan, in collaboration with the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), hosted an official award ceremony on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, to honor the historic first cohort of graduates from the country's pioneering opera singing courses. The prestigious event, held at the Romanian Embassy in Islamabad, celebrated the academic and artistic achievements of young Pakistani vocalists bridging the gap between Eastern and Western musical traditions.
The high-profile ceremony gathered key diplomatic and cultural figures to recognize the graduates. Attendees included H.E. Dan Stoenescu, Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, and Georgiana Costea-Glugă, the acclaimed Romanian soprano who led the instructional program.
They were joined by Muhammad Ayoub Jamali, Director General of PNCA, Zaildar Shah, Chairman of the Pakistan-Romania Friendship Association, and Ghulam Muhammad, Incharge of Music Classes at PNCA. The four pioneering student award recipients honored at the event were Imran Parvez Khan, Iria Siona, Ayzer Adeel, and Mohammad Tayyab Akbar.
A Milestone for Cultural Diplomacy
The specialized opera singing courses represent a landmark achievement in bilateral cultural diplomacy. As a unique fixture within Pakistan’s current cultural landscape, the initiative offers local artists an unprecedented platform to study European classical music.
“These four award recipients are much more than graduates of a course; they are officially the pioneers of opera music in Pakistan,” stated Ambassador Dan Stoenescu during his address. “Their dedication has laid the foundations for a new artistic tradition.”
Soprano Georgiana Costea-Glugă also praised the graduates, noting that their progress proves music is a universal language. She expressed confidence that this milestone marks just the beginning of a thriving operatic movement in the region.
Inside Pakistan's First Opera Program
Launched on April 9, 2025, the bi-weekly training program at the PNCA provides structured, professional guidance to local talent. The curriculum focuses on building the essential technical foundations required for elite lyrical performance.
Students in the program receive comprehensive training in several core areas:
Vocal technique and breath control
Stage presence and dramatic movement
Musical interpretation of classical scores
Artistic expression and language diction
Moving forward, both the Romanian Embassy and the PNCA have reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining this creative collaboration. The opera singing courses remain open to Pakistani vocalists of all skill levels, offering an ongoing opportunity for beginners and enthusiasts to study under professional international guidance.
