ISLAMABAD — H.E. Dr. Dan Stoenescu, Ambassador of Romania to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, addressed more than 100 journalists during a press conference at the National Press Club in Islamabad to highlight new avenues for Romania–Pakistan relations. The conference focused on translating over six decades of diplomatic ties into actionable trade, technology, and maritime connectivity projects while addressing the broader geopolitical impact of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Unlocking Maritime and Trade Potential
Ambassador Stoenescu pointed to significant opportunities to expand bilateral trade, positioning Romania as Pakistan's natural entry point to European markets. A major highlight was the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Port of Constanța and Karachi Port Trust in March 2026. This landmark agreement aims to boost direct maritime links between South Asia and Europe via the Black Sea and Danube trade corridor.
The envoy also referenced the recent visit of a high-level Pakistani commercial delegation to Romania in October 2026, alongside the Pakistan–Romania Business Forum in Bucharest. Key sectors exploring joint projects include logistics, agriculture, shipping, textiles, and information technology.
Accelerating Tech, Education, and Cultural Alliances
Building on the foundation laid by the inaugural Romania–Pakistan IT Forum—which connected over 100 tech companies in November 2025—Ambassador Stoenescu urged deeper partnership across
key digital domains:
Emerging Technologies: Joint ventures in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development, and fintech.
Academic Collaboration: Enhanced university exchanges supported by European funding frameworks like Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe.
Cultural Links: Bilateral language initiatives and institutional partnerships designed to deepen public diplomacy.
Black Sea Security and Regional Stability
Turning to regional security, Ambassador Stoenescu warned that Russia’s ongoing illegal war against Ukraine directly threatens commercial shipping and maritime stability along Romania’s border. He emphasized that maintaining safe trade corridors in the Black Sea is essential not only for European security, but for global economic resilience.
As a member of both NATO and the European Union, Romania remains firm in its commitment to international law, sovereign borders, and a peaceful resolution grounded in the United Nations Charter.
A Planted Symbol of Lasting Friendship
To mark his visit to the National Press Club, Ambassador Stoenescu planted a tree on the press club grounds as a lasting gesture of goodwill between both nations. Expressing his gratitude to the media core, he reaffirmed Romania’s goal of turning long-standing diplomatic warmth into practical economic progress and strategic partnership.
