ISLAMABAD — The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination officially commenced work on Pakistan’s first-ever National WASH Accounts on April 7, 2026. This landmark initiative, developed alongside the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, establishes a unified national database to ensure the climate-resilient delivery of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services across the country.
Collaborating with global partners including WaterAid, the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF, the project aims to eliminate critical data gaps. These gaps have historically hindered evidence-based financing and infrastructure planning at the federal and provincial levels.
A Unified Framework for Water Governance
For the first time, Pakistan is moving toward a singular national framework to track the status of essential hygiene services. Mohammad Saleem Shaikh, the ministry’s spokesperson and WASH policy specialist, described the move as a foundational shift toward evidence-based governance.
The National WASH Accounts will allow authorities to:
Generate standardized, real-time data on sector investments.
Monitor the efficiency of service delivery in rural and urban areas.
Oversee the transparent use of public funds and international aid.
Leveraging AI for Climate Resilience
The ministry plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced digital tools to modernize the nation’s data architecture. These technologies will streamline the collection, verification, and analysis of water-related statistics, allowing for proactive rather than reactive decision-making.
Aisha Humera Moriani, Federal Secretary for Climate Change, called the initiative a “turning point.” She noted that fragmented and outdated data has long undermined resource allocation, particularly as the country faces increasing environmental pressures.
Aligning with Global and National Goals
The unified system is expected to significantly improve Pakistan’s reporting on UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, which targets universal access to safe water and sanitation. Furthermore, it aligns with the government’s 5E framework and the URAAN Pakistan development agenda.
By providing a clear picture of underserved regions, the National WASH Accounts will ensure that future investments are directed where they are most needed to build a climate-secure future.
