GUJRANWALA – Regional Police Officer (RPO) Khurram Shahzad Haider Warraich has formally summoned SHO Eminabad and the Investigating Officer (IO) for an inquiry on April 9 following allegations of a fabricated case against veteran journalist Sadaqat Ali Naz. The Chairman of the Kamoke Union of Journalists (CUJ), a 70-year-old media veteran, was reportedly targeted in a baseless FIR on March 20, sparking an outcry over press freedom and the protection of senior
citizens in the profession.
A Lifetime of Service Met with Retaliation
The case against Sadaqat Ali Naz is being viewed by the media fraternity not merely as an individual grievance but as an assault on the dignity of journalism. Having spent decades highlighting public issues and advocating for social reform, the legal pressure on a septuagenarian journalist has raised serious questions about the misuse of police authority in the region.
Experts warn that such trends discourage the pursuit of truth. When senior journalists—who serve as the intellectual capital of society—are subjected to fear and intimidation, it weakens the democratic fabric and silences the voice of the public.
RPO Gujranwala Takes Notice of CUJ Grievances
A representative delegation from the Kamoke Union of Journalists met with RPO Warraich to present a formal request for a high-level investigation. The union highlighted that:
The FIR registered at Eminabad Police Station lacked any factual basis.
The subsequent release of Sadaqat Ali Naz by the courts further validates the claim of a malicious prosecution.
SHO Rana Wakeel and the relevant investigators must now provide justification for their actions on the upcoming inquiry date.
The Demand for Accountability
The journalistic community is calling for strict adherence to the law, demanding that those who abuse their power to settle personal or political scores be held accountable. Protecting the "Voice of Truth" is essential for a civilized society, and the outcome of the April 9 inquiry is being closely watched as a litmus test for justice in Gujranwala.
