In yet another deadly blow to press freedom, Israeli forces have killed renowned Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif, 28, along with three of his media colleagues in Gaza.

According to Al-Shifa Hospital, Al-Sharif and his team were targeted near the hospital’s main gate while inside a tent set up for journalists. Local officials say the attack was likely a targeted strike.

Those killed include Al Jazeera reporter Muhammad Quraqia, cameraman Ibrahim Zahir, and media worker Muhammad Noufal.

Al-Sharif was widely recognized for his extensive coverage of Israeli bombardments, the humanitarian crisis, and alleged war crimes in northern Gaza. Sources say he had been receiving continuous threats in recent weeks.

The Israeli military has claimed responsibility for the strike, alleging Al-Sharif was leading a Hamas cell — a claim yet to be substantiated with evidence.

The World Journalists Federation (WJF) strongly condemned the killing of journalists by Israeli forces, calling it a “grave violation of international law and a deliberate attack on press freedom.” The WJF urged the United Nations and international community to launch an immediate investigation and hold those responsible accountable.

Al-Sharif was among the few journalists tirelessly working to bring the scale of Gaza’s devastation to global attention.

Since the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, more than 200 journalists and media workers have been killed — many of them from the Al Jazeera network.
