In a recent statement shared on its official X account, Russia’s Foreign Ministry criticized the European Union’s sanctions policy, accusing it of pursuing a “self-destructive” path since 2014. The post, quoting MFA spokesperson Maria Zakharova, stated:

“The European Union has been tightening its anti‑Russia sanctions since 2014, stubbornly pursuing a self‑destructive policy. With each new decision to impose restrictions against Russia, their absurdity becomes more obvious.”

Russia argues that each successive round of sanctions imposed by the EU not only targets Russian interests but increasingly undermines European economic stability, energy security, and strategic positioning. This latest rebuke from Moscow came on the heels of recent EU moves to expand restrictions targeting Russia’s financial, industrial, and energy sectors.

The UI from the MFA tweet emphasizes Moscow’s framing of the policy as “absurd,” using both pointed language and a face-palm emoji to underline its criticism. Analysts suggest this may be part of a broader messaging effort designed to tilt public opinion, particularly in EU member states suffering from rising energy prices and inflationary pressures.
