ISLAMABAD — The United Kingdom has formally recognized Pakistan’s pivotal diplomatic role in easing regional tensions and maintaining global energy security. In a high-level meeting held on April 8, 2026, British High Commissioner H.E. Jane Marriott met with Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik to discuss volatile energy markets and bilateral mineral cooperation.
High Commissioner Marriott expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s constructive mediation efforts. She noted that Pakistan has effectively leveraged its strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including the United States and Iran, to promote peace and stabilize petroleum supply chains amidst international uncertainty.
Resilience in Energy Supply Chain Management
During the briefing, the High Commissioner commended the Pakistani government’s efficient handling of the domestic petroleum sector. Despite global price volatility, the UK noted that Pakistan successfully ensured the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products, avoiding the market distortions often seen during regional crises.
Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik emphasized that the government prioritized supply continuity over populist pricing strategies. "We do not want to repeat the path of populism, as witnessed in 2022," Malik stated, adding that a total supply disruption would have been far more damaging to the economy than a price shock.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Support
The Minister extended credit to several "friendly countries" that facilitated petroleum supplies during recent periods of uncertainty:
Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Oman: Provided critical facilitation for petroleum supplies.
Qatar: Recognized for past support, supplying LNG at approximately $10 when global rates soared to $30.
Domestic E&P Companies: Praised for increasing local exploration and production efforts.
Minister Malik also highlighted that domestic fertilizer prices in Pakistan remain at one-third of the cost compared to neighboring countries, thanks to targeted subsidies designed to protect vulnerable sectors of society.
Expanding UK-Pakistan Technical Cooperation
A significant portion of the meeting focused on institutional strengthening and technical collaboration. The High Commissioner highlighted the ongoing partnership between the British Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Pakistan.
Future cooperation will focus on:
Regulatory Strengthening: Enhancing the capacity of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
Mineral Sector Investment: Facilitating sustainable development in Pakistan’s untapped mineral resources.
Technical Knowledge Exchange: Strengthening institutional partnerships to ensure long-term energy security.
Both parties concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to a bilateral engagement strategy centered on investment facilitation and sustainable energy development.
