MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova officially welcomed the achievement of a cessation of hostilities agreement between the United States and Iran during a briefing on April 8, 2026. The Russian government, which has long advocated for a ceasefire, expressed hope that this pause in military activity will lead to a permanent political and diplomatic settlement.
Russia has maintained a consistent stance since the start of the conflict, calling for an end to what Zakharova described as a "destructive war" unleashed by the American–Israeli tandem. Moscow has actively pushed for this resolution through the UN Security Council while coordinating with global partners to stabilize the region.
Russia Praises Pakistan’s Diplomatic Efforts
A significant highlight of Zakharova’s statement was the "particular recognition" given to Islamabad. Russia credited Pakistan’s positive mediating role in bridging the gap between Washington and Tehran, leading to the current ceasefire.
Pakistan has emerged as a central figure in these peace efforts, with high-level negotiations now scheduled to take place in the Pakistani capital to finalize the terms of the agreement.
Focus on Long-Term Regional Security
While the cessation of hostilities is a major milestone, Zakharova emphasized that "substantial negotiations" are still required. Russia’s primary objectives for a final settlement include:
Respect for Sovereign Rights: Ensuring the interests of all regional states are protected.
Prevention of Recurrence: Guaranteeing that "man-made, entirely unprovoked" military crises do not return.
Sustainable Peace: Establishing a framework for long-term security in the Middle East.
Moscow has pledged to continue its active facilitation of these peace objectives as the international community looks toward the upcoming talks in Islamabad.
