GALAȚI, ROMANIA — A weaponized Russian drone carrying live explosives crashed directly into a residential apartment building in the eastern Romanian city of Galați, triggering a structural roof fire and violating NATO airspace. The incident, which occurred during a heavy Russian bombardment targeting critical civilian infrastructure in neighboring Ukraine, marks a dangerous and unprecedented escalation along the alliance's eastern flank.

Emergency rescue crews immediately evacuated the multi-story residential building as firefighters battled the flames on the roof structure. Local medical officials confirmed that two persons sustained minor injuries, while several other residents required urgent medical attention on-site for shock and smoke inhalation.
Romanian Air Force Scrambles Jets with Orders to Shoot
In immediate response to the cross-border penetration, the Romanian Ministry of National Defense detected multiple low-flying uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) on military radar networks. Two aircraft and a helicopter belonging to the Romanian Air Force were scrambled to intercept the threat, with pilots operating under direct tactical permission to shoot down the incoming targets.

Bucharest officials have fiercely condemned the strike, characterizing it as a grave and irresponsible violation of international law. The government declared that the Russian Federation bears direct, unambiguous responsibility for the severe danger posed to European citizens.
Diplomatic Fallout and Urgent NATO Appeal
The Romanian government is moving swiftly to implement a series of robust diplomatic and defensive counter-measures. Bucharest has already officially briefed European Union member states, regional allies, and the NATO Secretary General regarding the specific technical data surrounding the crash.
"Romania will act with the utmost determination to increase international pressure on the Russian Federation with a view to achieving an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire."
In tandem with diplomatic protests, Romania has submitted an expedited request to its international partners to accelerate the deployment and transfer of specialized anti-drone capabilities to secure the Danube border region.
