ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani reaffirmed the deep-rooted alliance between Pakistan and Azerbaijan today during a high-profile ceremony marking Azerbaijan’s Independence Day. Addressing a distinguished audience in Islamabad, Gilani emphasized that the relationship transcends standard diplomacy, anchored instead in shared religious, cultural, and historical bonds.
The event saw a significant gathering of leadership, including the Ambassador of Azerbaijan, Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, and top officials from both the National and Punjab Assemblies. The Chairman noted that the two nations have consistently supported one another during times of "joy and adversity," citing the enthusiastic celebrations in Azerbaijan following Pakistan's historical defense against external aggression.
Strengthening Parliamentary and Global Coordination
A central theme of the address was the robust parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Chairman Gilani detailed recent high-level meetings with the Azerbaijani President, focusing on synchronized efforts at major international forums.
Pakistan and Azerbaijan continue to maintain a close understanding within:
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)
The Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA)
Global humanitarian and security platforms
Gilani also praised the Azerbaijani President’s decision to declare the current year as the “Year of Architecture,” noting his appreciation for Azerbaijan’s modern architectural contributions and development initiatives within the capital city of Islamabad.
Revolutionizing Connectivity: 11 Weekly Flights
In a move to bolster public and trade relations, the Chairman highlighted a significant expansion in air travel. He announced that 11 weekly flights are now operational between Azerbaijan and the cities of Islamabad and Lahore.
To promote tourism and people-to-people connectivity, flight fares have been strategically lowered compared to other international destinations. Travelers can now reach Azerbaijan from Pakistan in less than three hours, with plans already in place to further increase flight frequencies in the near future.
The Legacy of the Multani Caravanserai
Reflecting on the historical depth of the partnership, Gilani referenced the “Multani Caravanserai” in Baku. This UNESCO-recognized site carries a 700-year history, serving as a testament to the ancient Silk Route traders who traveled from Multan to Azerbaijan.
The Chairman concluded his address by raising the slogan “Long Live Pakistan-Azerbaijan Friendship,” reaffirming a state-level commitment to enduring bilateral ties.
