MOSCOW — The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a scathing condemnation on Tuesday following a "highly dangerous" strike in the immediate vicinity of Unit 1 at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Iran. Moscow expressed deep outrage, labeling the attack a reckless manifestation of a destructive military course that risks a regional nuclear disaster.
The strike occurred on March 24, 2026, directly contradicting recent claims from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a five-day pause in attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure. Russian officials warned that these escalating military actions are moving perilously close to the plant's operating power units.
Threat of Global Nuclear Catastrophe
Russian diplomats emphasized that any direct hit on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant would trigger "irreversible humanitarian and environmental consequences." The ministry accused the aggressors of deliberately courting a large-scale catastrophe to justify ongoing military operations in the region.
"It is only by sheer luck that tragedy has so far been avoided," the ministry stated, noting that projectiles are landing increasingly closer to the active reactor.
Safety of Russian Specialists at Risk
A significant portion of the ministry's concern focused on the safety of the plant’s personnel. Bushehr Unit 1 was built with Russian assistance and continues to be supported by Rosatom specialists. Moscow declared the constant threat to these experts and local workers as "categorically unacceptable."
Recent reports indicate that Rosatom has already begun the third stage of evacuations for non-essential staff, though dozens of specialists remain on-site to oversee critical equipment and ensure the facility's stability.
Demands for IAEA and UN Intervention
The Russian Foreign Ministry called for immediate, resolute action from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations. They reminded the international community that the Bushehr NPP is covered by the IAEA Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
The statement concluded with a demand for the U.S. and Israel to "come to their senses" and cease unprovoked aggression against Iran's civilian nuclear energy infrastructure, warning that the current path threatens the safety of the entire Persian Gulf.
