Admiral (Retired) Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Pakistan, hosted a distinguished reception in Islamabad in honor of the Sri Lankan Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Udeni Priyadarshana Rajapaksa.

The event was attended by prominent figures from both Sri Lanka and Pakistan, including the Commander of the Sri Lankan Air Force, Vice Admiral Thasnim (Retired) and his spouse, Pakistan Air Force Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Personnel) Mr. Shakeel, as well as Sri Lankan High Commission staff.

In his address to the gathering, High Commissioner Wijegunaratne extended a warm welcome to Air Marshal Rajapaksa, commending his exemplary service and his extensive training, much of which was undertaken in Pakistan. The High Commissioner emphasized the deep-rooted friendship and enduring military cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, stating that this bond has been reinforced by decades of mutual respect and support.

Highlighting Air Marshal Rajapaksa’s impressive career, Admiral Wijegunaratne recounted several courageous moments that defined the Air Marshal’s piloting skills, including successful missions that demonstrated his resilience and composure in high-risk situations. The High Commissioner emphasized that Rajapaksa’s training in Pakistan played a vital role in shaping his safety and emergency response skills, which have been essential in the Air Marshal’s journey as both a fighter and transport aircraft pilot.

Reflecting on historical ties, Admiral Wijegunaratne expressed Sri Lanka’s unwavering gratitude to Pakistan for its consistent support, recounting instances where Pakistan extended critical assistance during challenging periods in Sri Lanka’s history. Drawing a powerful analogy, he likened Sri Lankans to elephants, who “never forget” those who have supported them, reaffirming that Pakistan’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the hearts of the Sri Lankan people.

Admiral Wijegunaratne also shared anecdotes highlighting Sri Lanka’s rich historical legacy and trade connections with the Mughal Empire, underscoring the region’s long-standing connections. He urged the younger generation to remember the strength of these ties and the resilience that has shaped both nations over centuries.
