Admiral (Retired) Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Pakistan, hosted a distinguished reception in Islamabad in honor of the Sri Lankan Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Udeni Priyadarshana Rajapaksa.
The event was attended by prominent figures from both Sri Lanka and Pakistan, including the Commander of the Sri Lankan Air Force, Vice Admiral Thasnim (Retired) and his spouse, Pakistan Air Force Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Personnel) Mr. Shakeel, as well as Sri Lankan High Commission staff.
In his address to the gathering, High Commissioner Wijegunaratne extended a warm welcome to Air Marshal Rajapaksa, commending his exemplary service and his extensive training, much of which was undertaken in Pakistan. The High Commissioner emphasized the deep-rooted friendship and enduring military cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, stating that this bond has been reinforced by decades of mutual respect and support.
Highlighting Air Marshal Rajapaksaโs impressive career, Admiral Wijegunaratne recounted several courageous moments that defined the Air Marshalโs piloting skills, including successful missions that demonstrated his resilience and composure in high-risk situations. The High Commissioner emphasized that Rajapaksaโs training in Pakistan played a vital role in shaping his safety and emergency response skills, which have been essential in the Air Marshalโs journey as both a fighter and transport aircraft pilot.
Reflecting on historical ties, Admiral Wijegunaratne expressed Sri Lankaโs unwavering gratitude to Pakistan for its consistent support, recounting instances where Pakistan extended critical assistance during challenging periods in Sri Lankaโs history. Drawing a powerful analogy, he likened Sri Lankans to elephants, who “never forget” those who have supported them, reaffirming that Pakistanโs contributions have left an indelible mark on the hearts of the Sri Lankan people.
Admiral Wijegunaratne also shared anecdotes highlighting Sri Lankaโs rich historical legacy and trade connections with the Mughal Empire, underscoring the regionโs long-standing connections. He urged the younger generation to remember the strength of these ties and the resilience that has shaped both nations over centuries.
