KARACHI — A high-level United States delegation led by US Consul General in Karachi H.E. Charles Goodman visited the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on September 29, 2026, engaging in wide-ranging discussions to expand commercial and economic cooperation in Pakistan's maritime sector.
The delegation was received by Chairman KPT Rear Admiral (Retd) Shahid Ahmed, who detailed the port's ongoing transformation into a technology-driven, AI-enabled fifth-generation port designed to serve as a competitive regional transit and transshipment hub.
Expansion, AI Integration, and Infrastructure Modernization
During the briefing, Chairman KPT highlighted record cargo handling performance, improved international maritime rankings, and stronger liner shipping connectivity achieved through heavy investments by KPT and terminal operators in recent months.
Key modernization and infrastructure priorities discussed during the delegation's visit include:
Smart Operations & Digitalization: Integrating AI frameworks, smart port operations, and green-port initiatives to streamline maritime logistics.
Capacity & Dredging: Deepening navigational channels and bolstering bunkering services to accommodate larger commercial vessels.
140-Acre Maritime Business District: Showcasing major investment opportunities for foreign firms within KPT’s upcoming commercial district.
Agricultural Trade Facilitation: Exploring the establishment of USDA-APHIS-approved phytosanitary treatment and storage facilities to boost Pakistani mango exports to the United States.
Field Inspection of Advanced Container Terminals
Consul General Goodman and the US delegation praised KPT's modernization roadmap and witnessed ongoing operational capabilities during a tour of major terminal facilities, including South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPTL), Karachi Global Port Terminal (KGTL), and Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT).
Both sides reaffirmed their desire to deepen bilateral trade channels, expand maritime infrastructure investment, and support sustainable supply chain logistics across the region.
