Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to his distinguished two-decade-long career. The celebrated wicketkeeper-batter, known for his dynamic leadership, guided Pakistan to their historic ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2017 and secured the world number one ranking in T20 International cricket.
Sarfaraz Ahmed Retirement: A Legacy of Leadership
Ahmed's captaincy marked a significant era for Pakistan cricket, particularly in the shortest format. He led the national team in 100 international matches across all formats, comprising 50 One Day Internationals, 37 T20Is, and 13 Tests.
Under his guidance, Pakistan achieved an impressive streak of 11 consecutive T20I series victories. This remarkable run included six clean sweeps against formidable opponents such as the West Indies (2016 and 2018), Sri Lanka (2017), Australia (2018), New Zealand (2018), and Scotland (2018).
His leadership journey began even earlier, as he captained Pakistan to glory in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in 2006, foreshadowing his future success on the senior stage.
Individual Milestones and Nurturing Future Stars
Beyond his tactical prowess, Sarfaraz Ahmed also holds impressive individual achievements. He uniquely stands as the only Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s, a feat accomplished against England in 2016.
In a Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2019, Ahmed set a record by taking 10 catches, showcasing his exceptional skills behind the stumps.
Ahmed takes immense pride in his role in developing emerging talents. During his captaincy, players like Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Faheem Ashraf, and Imamul Haq flourished, evolving into match-winners for Pakistan.
His international journey commenced with an ODI appearance in 2007, culminating in his final Test match against Australia in Perth in 2023.
