The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomes the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly today, Tuesday, of a resolution affirming the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination by an overwhelming majority, as a fundamental and inalienable right and a pillar of the United Nations Charter. The resolution also included in its text the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on the necessity of ending the illegal occupation of the State of Palestine.
The Ministry indicates that the vote of 172 countries in favor of this resolution sends a glimmer of hope to our people that the world stands by them in the face of genocide, colonial settlement and settler terrorism, and thanks the sister and friendly countries and those that sponsored and voted on the resolution, at a time when the Palestinian people are subjected to genocide and continuous violation of all rights, including the right to self-determination.
The Ministry reaffirms the importance of implementing the General Assembly resolution that adopted the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the illegality of the Israeli occupation and the demand to end it as soon as possible and to stop the violation of the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people and prevent them from exercising this right.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the countries that did not support the resolution and were isolated by their negative vote to review their positions and join the moral majority consistent with international law. The Ministry will also continue to work with the components of the international community to implement these resolutions and transform them into effective mechanisms for their implementation.
172 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while only 7 countries voted against it (Israel, the United States, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Nauru), and 8 countries abstained (Ecuador, Liberia, Toga, Tonga, Panama, Palau, Tuvalu, Kiribati).
