The World Ambassador
United Nations, New York —
This morning, the United Nations community gathered to honour 168 colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty during 2024.
The ceremony, an intimate tribute shared with the families of the fallen, was also a powerful moment of public reflection. Each life remembered today was more than a name — they were individuals of exceptional courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to peace and humanity.
These women and men dedicated themselves to easing suffering, defending human dignity, and protecting lives in some of the world’s most dangerous and difficult settings.
The past year was especially devastating in Gaza, where 126 UN personnel were killed — 125 of them serving with UNRWA. This marks the highest staff death toll in United Nations history, with more than one in every 50 UNRWA staff in Gaza losing their lives amid the ongoing conflict. Many died while delivering aid, protecting others, or alongside their families.
The loss of all 168 staff members — including humanitarians, peacekeepers, and peacemakers — is a profound tragedy. But it is also a solemn reminder of the risks UN personnel face every day, and of their unshakable sense of duty.
As the UN mourns those who have fallen, it also recognizes the courage and commitment of thousands of staff still serving around the globe. These individuals don’t seek recognition; they seek to make a difference. In war zones and disaster areas, they bring aid. In times of injustice, they raise their voices. In the face of violence, they work tirelessly for peace.
To those still serving in crisis zones: your bravery humbles us, and your resilience inspires us.
To the world: the UN will not grow indifferent to suffering. We will not accept the killing of humanitarian workers, journalists, medical personnel, or civilians as the new normal — anywhere, under any circumstances. Impunity must have no place.
Today’s tribute is also a call to uphold the values the fallen stood for. Despite growing challenges to international cooperation and multilateralism, the dedication of UN staff remains steadfast — even when financial support is uncertain.
As we remember those we’ve lost, we reaffirm our commitment to their legacy:
We will stand firm in our principles.
We will hold true to our values.
And we will never, ever give up.
