The flagship resolution on the “Universal Realization of the Right of the People to Self-determination,” sponsored by Pakistan, has been unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. Supported and co-sponsored by numerous countries worldwide, the resolution upholds the fundamental principle of the right to self-determination, as outlined in Article 1 of the UN Charter and the Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.

Emphasizing its unwavering support, the resolution reaffirms the right to self-determination for people living under foreign occupation, colonial domination, and subjugation. It strongly opposes foreign occupation, intervention, and aggression, calling for an immediate cessation of such actions by responsible States.

Additionally, the resolution underscores that the universal realization of the right to self-determination is crucial for the effective guarantee and observance of human rights, as well as the preservation and promotion of these rights.

For over four decades, Pakistan has championed this annual initiative, offering a message of hope to those residing in internationally recognized situations of foreign occupation, including Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Occupied Palestine.

This resolution aims to address the denial of the inalienable right to self-determination for these affected populations.
