MOSCOW: The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the next round of bilateral consultations between Russia and the United States—intended to normalize the functioning of diplomatic missions—has been cancelled by the American side.

In a brief statement, Russian officials expressed regret over the abrupt decision and noted that the cancellation was initiated by U.S. negotiators. The talks were expected to address long-standing issues related to diplomatic staffing, consular services, and access restrictions at embassies in both countries.

“We hope that the pause taken by our American counterparts will not be excessively prolonged,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, signaling Moscow’s willingness to resume dialogue once Washington is prepared to re-engage.

This development comes amid persistent tensions between the two nations over geopolitical disputes, sanctions, and mutual diplomatic expulsions in recent years. The suspension of these talks is seen as a setback to ongoing efforts to stabilize strained bilateral relations.
