President Donald Trump has announced an early departure from the G7 summit in Canada, citing rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Iran. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating his need to return to Washington ahead of schedule to monitor developments and lead potential diplomatic efforts.
“I have to be back as soon as I can,” Trump said during a press briefing in Kananaskis, Alberta. The White House confirmed his early return was directly linked to the unfolding crisis, marking a significant pivot from international economic discussions to national security concerns.
Trump issued a stark warning on social media Monday, calling on residents to “immediately evacuate Tehran,” though he did not provide specific details about the threat. The message raised international alarm and underscored the potential for broader conflict.
Despite initial reluctance, Trump ultimately endorsed a joint G7 statement calling for de-escalation in the region. The declaration emphasized Israel’s right to self-defense, condemned Iran as a source of regional instability, and stressed the importance of protecting civilians.
Behind the scenes, Trump has instructed his team—including Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff—to seek immediate dialogue with Iranian officials. A U.S. official confirmed that discussions are underway to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, although no formal talks have been scheduled.
Trump told G7 leaders that Iran has made indirect contact through intermediaries and hinted that Tehran may be open to negotiating. However, he did not detail the U.S. response if diplomatic channels fail, including any plans for military action.
The administration maintains that U.S. forces remain in a defensive posture and have not participated in Israeli military operations. “We will defend American interests,” White House spokesperson Alex Pfeiffer posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Top U.S. security officials, including Gen. Dan “Raizin” Caine, were seen arriving at the White House Monday as Trump ordered national security meetings to be prepared in the Situation Room.
Ultimately, the G7 leaders issued a revised joint statement with Trump’s approval. The final text affirmed the group’s commitment to peace, security in the Middle East, and the prevention of nuclear proliferation. European leaders, while initially doubtful, welcomed the consensus.
“The G7 is united in calling for restraint and a pathway to diplomatic resolution,” the statement concluded.
