Lahore: The 37th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) was held from October 28 to November 6, 2024, in Tokyo’s Hibiya–Yurakucho–Marunouchi–Ginza precincts, bringing together filmmakers, actors, critics, and audiences from across the globe. Over ten days, the festival screened 208 films spanning a wide range of genres and themes, from International Competition entries to Asian Future, Animation, Nippon Cinema Now, and the newly introduced Women’s Empowerment section, highlighting TIFF’s growing focus on inclusivity.
The festival opened with 11 Rebels, a Japanese samurai-action drama directed by Kazuya Shiraishi, and closed with the French film Marcello Mio, directed by Christophe Honoré, starring Chiara Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. These selections reflected TIFF’s commitment to showcasing both national and international cinema on its stage.
Awards were presented across multiple categories, with the Tokyo Grand Prix, the festival’s highest honor, going to Teki Cometh by Yoshida Daihachi. The same film also secured Best Director, while its lead, Nagatsuka Kyozo, was named Best Actor. Best Actress was awarded to Anamaria Vartolomei for her performance in Traffic, and Best Artistic Contribution went to My Friend An Delie, directed by Dong Zijian. The Audience Award was claimed by Big World, directed by Yang Lina, which resonated strongly with viewers.
Other significant recognitions included the Asian Future Best Film, awarded to Apollon by Day Athena by Night by Emine Yildirim, and the TIFF Ethical Film Award, presented to Dahomey by Mati Diop. Renowned Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while the Kurosawa Akira Award honored Sho Miyake from Japan and Fu Tien-yu from Taiwan for their contributions to the art of filmmaking.
The festival also hosted the Japan Location Short Film Competition, supported by the Motion Picture Association, spotlighting Japanese landscapes and regional cultures. Jury President Tony Leung, along with a distinguished international panel, lent further prestige to the event.
In terms of attendance, TIFF 2024 welcomed around 61,576 admissions for film screenings, with total participation across panels, workshops, and other cultural activities approaching 96,866. The festival not only showcased cinematic talent but also encouraged meaningful discussions on creativity, representation, and collaboration in the global film industry.
Through its diverse programming and international reach, the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival strengthened its standing as one of Asia’s most dynamic platforms for cinema. By celebrating established names while spotlighting emerging voices, the event successfully bridged tradition with innovation, reaffirming its role as a cultural hub where stories from around the world find a vibrant audience in Tokyo.
