The annual Carnival celebrations have begun in Germany, with people of all ages dressed in colorful costumes and unique disguises, joining the grand parades across different neighborhoods. The festivities started on Thursday, February 27, and are centered in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where schools in various cities have declared holidays lasting until next Tuesday.
The most enthusiastic Carnival crowds can be seen in the state capital Düsseldorf and the vibrant city of Cologne, which is considered the heart of the festival. Due to the large gatherings, security measures have been significantly tightened in these cities.
A Traditional Celebration
One of the longstanding traditions of Carnival in the Rhineland region is “Weiberfastnacht” or “Old Maids’ Day,” a day dedicated to women. On this day, women symbolically take control by cutting off men’s neckties, representing a playful challenge to male dominance. It is considered a day of female empowerment and leadership.
Rosenmontag: The Peak of Carnival
As the weekend approaches, every town and district hosts parades, leading up to the grand highlight of Carnival—”Rosenmontag” or “Rose Monday.” This day features large-scale processions with music groups and marching bands parading through the streets. Carnival floats, carrying people dressed in vibrant costumes, travel in decorated convoys while throwing chocolates, candies, drinks, and small gifts to the cheering crowds lining the streets. The festival is a lively mix of music, color, and excitement.
Political Satire and Humor
One of the defining aspects of Carnival is its tradition of “political satire,” where jesters perform humorous sketches mocking politicians and public figures. In Cologne, massive parades showcase large floats carrying clowns impersonating political leaders, celebrities, and thinkers, adding a satirical twist to the celebration. These jesters entertain the crowd by mimicking well-known personalities and delivering witty remarks.
Security Concerns and Measures
This year, there have been reports of threats against Carnival celebrations circulating on social media. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has dismissed these posts as “propaganda publications.” However, Cologne police have described the security situation as more “tense” compared to previous years, prompting stricter measures.
To ensure safety, 1,500 police officers, 300 additional public order workers, and 1,200 private security personnel have been deployed. Authorities have also installed “drive-over” barriers to prevent vehicular attacks on crowds. Additionally, police officers will conduct knife checks among parade attendees. The increased presence of law enforcement personnel is noticeable across the city.
Carnival holds a significant place in German cultural traditions, attracting millions of participants each year who revel in its lively and festive spirit.
