South Korea: The Islamabad-based World Journalists Federation, led by its President Jun Hyuk Lee, General Secretary Abid Siddique Chaudhry, and the Executive Council, has strongly condemned the incidents of harassment against senior Pakistani journalist Javeria Siddiq, the widow of renowned anchorperson and martyr Arshad Sharif.

According to the official statement, certain unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled threats and abusive remarks at high volume outside Javeria Siddiq’s residence. These actions have raised serious concerns not only about her personal safety but also about the security of her family. The World Journalists Federation described the incident as a grave violation of press freedom and fundamental human rights.

The Federation has urged prime Minister Of Pakistan  Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the Inspector General of Police Islamabad, and other law enforcement agencies to immediately identify those responsible, bring them to justice, and ensure complete and effective security for Javeria Siddiq and her family.

Press Freedom and the Global Context

The protection of journalists in Pakistan remains a critical issue that continues to draw the attention of the international community, global media organizations, and human rights bodies. At the United Nations and other international forums, freedom of expression and the safety of journalists are recognized as fundamental human rights, essential for transparency, accountability, and global cooperation.

The World Journalists Federation has further demanded that the Government of Pakistan conduct a full, transparent, and impartial investigation into the matter. The organization noted that Javeria Siddiq has already been enduring severe emotional trauma following the martyrdom of her husband, and subjecting her to harassment amounts to further mental distress. Prompt and decisive action, the Federation emphasized, is essential not only to restore journalists’ confidence but also to safeguard Pakistan’s international reputation.
