Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Admiral Wijegunaratne Leads Inspiring 76th Independence Day Ceremony in Islamabad

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Islamabad commemorated the 76th Anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka with a grand event held at a local hotel in Islamabad.

 

The festivities commenced with a patriotic display as the national anthems of both Sri Lanka and Pakistan resonated through the venue, performed by a distinguished military band.

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne accompanied by Chief Guest Federal Health Minister Nadeem Jan, and the High Commissioner of Mauritius, joined the defense attaché of South Africa and other dignitaries in the ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolizing the shared joy of Sri Lanka’s independence.

 

Highlighting the occasion, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner, Admiral Wijegunaratne (Retd), delivered an inspiring speech addressing recent developments in Sri Lanka, emphasizing the country’s significant achievements against terrorism. He expressed gratitude to the Pakistani government and military for their unwavering support across various fields. The High Commissioner underscored the enduring friendship and robust defense relationship between the two nations.

 

The event also featured the ceremonial lighting of the traditional lamp by the High Commissioner, Chief Guest, and esteemed dignitaries, symbolizing enlightenment and unity.

 

An engaging three-minute video showcased Sri Lanka’s developmental strides and achievements, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to international cooperation. The report highlighted Sri Lanka’s exceptional contribution of over 30,000 eye corneas to Pakistan, reflecting the deep humanitarian ties between the two countries.

 

The celebration attracted a distinguished audience, including diplomats, defense attaches, media representatives, and friends of the Sri Lanka High Commissioner. The Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka to Peshawar and Lahore, along with the Lanka High Commission staff, added to the distinguished gathering.

 

Earlier on February 4th, the official ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag by His Excellency Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunaratne (Retd), the High Commissioner. The event continued with the rendition of the National Anthem in Sinhala and a solemn two-minute silence to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

 

The High Commission of Sri Lanka extends its heartfelt appreciation to all participants for their presence, contributing to the success of this momentous celebration.
