Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Admiral (Retired) Ravi Wijegunaratne, has donated ten additional eye corneas to Brigadier (Dr.) Waquar, Director of the Pakistan Military Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi. These corneas, donated by deceased individuals in Sri Lanka, aim to restore the eyesight of those in need. This donation marks the 26,215th eye cornea gifted by Sri Lankans to the people of Pakistan.
These corneas will be transplanted on gallant Pakistan Army personnel who lost their eyesight due to terrorist activities, especially due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) explosions on a priority basis, as well as to retired Pakistan Military personnel and their family members.
High Commissioner Admiral Wijegunaratne expressed his happiness and pride in being able to assist the people of Pakistan, particularly the Pakistan Military. He stated, “Pakistan provided us with unconditional support in both military hardware and training to combat LTTE terrorists in Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s support during critical times in our recent history helped us eradicate the terrorist menace in Sri Lanka.”
Accompanying the High Commissioner was Brigadier Kaminda Silva, the Defence Adviser of the Sri Lanka High Commission in Islamabad.
They later they witnessed Pakistan Military Eye Specialists transplanting the donated eye corneas to patients in the state-of-the-art operation theaters at the Military Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi.
The coordination and funding for transferring these ten eye corneas by air were facilitated by Mr. Idris Admani, President of the Sri Lanka-Pakistan Friendship Society, in liaison with the Eye Donation Society of Sri Lanka
