The Sri Lanka Navy will take over command of the Combined Task Force (CTF) 154 at the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), the world’s largest maritime coalition, based in Bahrain in January 2025, it is learned.

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) will take over command of the CTF 154 based in Bahrain in January 2025, with the SLN planing dispatch a team of officers to CTF 154 headquarters by the end of the year, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera told The Sri Lankan media. The command, the first for the Sri Lanka Navy in its 74 year history is a milestone.

“This opportunity is a tremendous recognition given to the Sri Lanka Navy for its display of professionalism and its long standing commitment to ensuring maritime security in the region” Adm. Perera said.

Sri Lanka became a partner of the CMF in November 2023, after trying to secure entry to the multinational maritime partnership for several years. The 46-member multinational partnership began in the early 2000s following concerns about piracy, terrorism, and maritime crime. The SLN has been actively participating in joint maritime security operations, representing the island nation to promote a safe maritime environment free from illicit non-state actors.

Combined Task Force (CTF) 154 is one of five task forces operated by Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). CTF 154 trains partner navies and improves operational capabilities to enhance maritime security.

Yesterday, a delegation led by the Commander (CTF) 154, Commodore Haytham Elsayed Khalil called on the Commander of the Navy at the Navy Headquarters where they discussed key bilateral issues and the SLN’s upcoming responsibility of the Task Force, reported by SL media.
