Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally on Saturday, suffering a gunshot wound to his ear. The incident raises serious concerns about the security provided to the Republican presidential candidate.
According to International Media, the attack occurred just as Trump began his speech. He was immediately surrounded and shielded by security agents. Despite the injury, Trump emerged with blood streaked across his face, defiantly pumping his fist and mouthing “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
The Trump campaign later confirmed that he was “doing well” and had not sustained any major injuries.
Law enforcement officials have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Trump, 78, was shot in the right ear, causing significant bleeding. He was quickly escorted offstage and into a waiting black SUV by Secret Service agents.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. Much bleeding took place.” He was later flown to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, under Secret Service protection.
This incident marks the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
The FBI has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the “subject involved” in the attempted assassination. According to state voter records, Crooks was a registered Republican.
Earlier reports indicated that the suspect was shot and killed by Secret Service agents at the scene. Additionally, one rally attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured during the chaos.
The Trump campaign and law enforcement agencies are conducting a thorough investigation into the security breach that allowed this attack to occur.
