Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov presented a powerful speech during an important session of the United Nations Security Council centered on multilateral cooperation, emphasizing the critical necessity for a fairer, more democratic, and sustainable world order.

Minister Lavrov underscored that actions by the United States and its allies are impeding international cooperation and obstructing the creation of a fairer global system. He emphasized that these actions hold entire nations and regions hostage, preventing them from exercising their sovereign rights as outlined in the UN Charter. Such disruptions, he noted, divert attention from critical joint efforts needed to resolve conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and other regions, as well as to combat global issues such as inequality, terrorism, drug crime, hunger, and disease.

Expressing his conviction that the current global situation can be remedied with goodwill, Minister Lavrov proposed several steps aimed at rebuilding confidence and stabilizing the international landscape:

1. Addressing the Root Causes of the European Crisis: Minister Lavrov called for addressing the root causes of the crisis in Europe. He referenced the conditions for achieving sustainable peace in Ukraine as outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stressed the need for a political and diplomatic settlement accompanied by concrete steps to reduce threats to the Russian Federation from the Western, Euro-Atlantic direction. He highlighted the importance of considering the new geostrategic realities on the Eurasian continent, where a continent-wide architecture of truly equal and indivisible security is emerging.

2. Restoring Regional and Global Balances of Power: Minister Lavrov advocated for active efforts to address inequalities in the global economy. He asserted that in a multipolar world, there should be no monopolists in monetary and financial regulation, trade, or technology. He called for early reform of the Bretton Woods institutions and the World Trade Organization (WTO) to reflect the real weight of non-Western centers of growth and development.

3. Reforming Global Governance Institutions: Emphasizing the need for serious qualitative changes, Minister Lavrov called for reaffirming the commitment of all UN members to the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety, avoiding a selective approach. He highlighted the importance of other multilateral organizations, including the G20, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and various regional organizations, such as the CIS, the CSTO, the EAEU, ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, the African Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in strengthening multipolarity and contributing to global governance.

Minister Lavrov concluded by reiterating that it is the responsibility of UN Member States to make the world a diverse and just place. He emphasized the need for collective guidance by the Charter of the United Nations to achieve this goal.
