June 12 — The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s overnight airstrikes on Iran, warning that the escalating tensions pose a grave threat to regional and global security.
“We express our profound concern regarding the dangerous escalation in the Middle East,” the Ministry said in a statement.
Moscow described the Israeli strikes as a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law, noting that the attacks were unprovoked and targeted peaceful cities, Iranian citizens, and critical nuclear infrastructure. The Ministry emphasized that such actions are “totally unacceptable” and called on the international community not to turn a blind eye.
The timing of the strikes was also called into question, as they coincided with an ongoing session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors and ahead of a new round of indirect US-Iran nuclear talks in Oman.
“The attacks appear particularly cynical,” the statement said, accusing Israel of deliberately derailing diplomatic efforts to resolve concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme.
Moscow pointed fingers at West Jerusalem for intentionally escalating the situation and warned that the consequences of these “provocative acts” rest entirely with Israeli leadership.
The Foreign Ministry also expressed concern for IAEA personnel, who, along with Iranian civilians, were reportedly exposed to the Israeli attacks. It urged the IAEA Director General to deliver an impartial and comprehensive analysis, including potential radiological risks resulting from the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Additionally, Russia criticized Western nations for what it described as fueling “anti-Iran hysteria” at the IAEA, pushing through a politically motivated resolution lacking broad international support.
“This destructive approach carries dangerous consequences,” the statement warned.
Russia reiterated its position that Iran’s nuclear issue cannot be resolved through military action.
“A lasting solution is only achievable through peaceful, diplomatic means,” the statement concluded, expressing hope that restraint would prevail to prevent a wider regional conflict.
Moscow acknowledged reports that the United States remains open to further negotiations with Iran, with the next round expected to take place in Oman.
