New York, September 24, 2025 — Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly session at UN Headquarters in New York.
During their talks, the two leaders exchanged views on a broad range of issues, including Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections, reforms introduced by the Interim Government, Pakistan’s recovery efforts following recent devastating floods, bilateral trade and investment, and the future of regional cooperation.
Professor Yunus conveyed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences over the tragic floods in Pakistan, which claimed more than 1,000 lives. Prime Minister Sharif stressed that such disasters highlight the worsening impacts of climate change, underscoring the urgent need for global climate action.
Sharing details on Bangladesh’s political developments, Professor Yunus confirmed that the country is preparing for general elections in February. He expressed optimism that major reforms proposed by 11 national commissions, along with the “July Charter,” would strengthen constitutional safeguards and prevent the return of autocratic rule.
The leaders also discussed the inactive role of SAARC in recent years and explored alternative frameworks to strengthen regional ties. Prime Minister Sharif extended an invitation to Professor Yunus to visit Pakistan before the Interim Government’s tenure concludes.
