The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad hosted a grand reception to commemorate Czech National Day, drawing a large gathering of dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, and prominent figures. Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, honored the event as chief guest.

The ceremony commenced with the national anthems of both the Czech Republic and Pakistan, setting a tone of mutual respect and camaraderie. In his opening speech, Czech Ambassador Ladislav Steinhubel extended a warm welcome to Dr. Siddiqui and the distinguished guests, underscoring the deep-rooted diplomatic and business ties between Pakistan and the Czech Republic. He also announced plans for the upcoming 75th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year.

Ambassador Steinhubel highlighted the shared interest in tourism, noting that several Czech mountaineers and tourists have increasingly chosen Pakistan as a travel destination. Drawing a cultural connection, he likened the Czech Republic’s passion for ice hockey to Pakistan’s enthusiasm for cricket. The Ambassador concluded his remarks with heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who made the National Day reception possible.

Dr. Siddiqui, representing the Government of Pakistan, conveyed messages of friendship and goodwill on behalf of the Prime Minister and emphasized Pakistan’s appreciation for the long-standing diplomatic ties, first established in 1950. “Pakistan values its relationship with the Czech Republic both bilaterally and within the European Union framework,” Dr. Siddiqui remarked. “We look forward to expanding collaboration across all sectors.”

In his address, Dr. Siddiqui highlighted key collaborations, mentioning Czech contributions to Pakistan’s power sector infrastructure, including turbines at Mangla Dam and the development of Independent Power Plants (IPPs) like Orient Power in Balloki and Sapphire Electric in Muridke. He acknowledged the close cooperation between Pakistan and the Czech Republic on various international and regional issues and their collaborative efforts within the United Nations.

Dr. Siddiqui further emphasized the robust parliamentary ties and growing trade relations between both countries, with bilateral trade increasing in recent years, bolstered by a 2023 economic cooperation agreement. He also praised the Czech Republic’s expertise in coal, mining, heavy machinery, and precision engineering, which opens doors for expanded trade and investment opportunities.

The Federal Minister acknowledged the Pakistani community residing in the Czech Republic, commending the Czech government’s role in fostering people-to-people connections and supporting Pakistani nationals. He also welcomed the increasing number of Pakistani students choosing Czech universities for higher education as a positive step toward strengthening educational and cultural ties.

The event culminated in a cake-cutting ceremony, where a traditional cake adorned with the flags of both the Czech Republic and Pakistan was cut by Ambassador Steinhubel, alongside Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Dean of Diplomatic Corp’s Atadjan Moalamov, Ambassadors of the European Union and Honorary Consul General, and others.

This symbolic gesture highlighted the unity and friendship between the two nations, closing the evening on a note of celebration and shared commitment to a prosperous future.
