The Ambassador Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, in a momentous celebration, highlighted the paramount importance of cultural and linguistic cooperation between Portugal and Brazil, marking the International Day of Portuguese Language, as per UNESCO’s decree, observed on May 5th.
The event, a testament to the collaborative spirit of Portuguese-speaking nations within the CPLP (Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries), showcased vibrant festivities held in Lahore and Islamabad, Pakistan. Portugal Ambassador da Silva expressed profound gratitude towards the Alhamra Arts Council and the Aga Khan Cultural Service for their invaluable partnership and unwavering support.
In Lahore, the focus was on heritage discussions revolving around UNESCO-classified sites in both Portugal and Brazil, fostering a deeper appreciation of their shared cultural and historical bonds. Meanwhile, in Islamabad, significant sessions held at prestigious institutions such as NUST and Quaid-e-Azam University garnered enthusiastic participation from students and professors alike.
The Ambassador, in a lighthearted moment, humorously suggested the potential membership of Pakistan in CPLP, showcasing the inclusive vision of the organization. Acknowledging the presence and contributions of Brazilian cultural figures, particularly from the renowned UNESCO World Heritage site of Ouro Preto, renowned for its 16th-century architecture, Ambassador da Silva commended their efforts in promoting Portuguese language and culture.
Providing an insightful overview of CPLP, founded in 1996 in Lisbon, the organization’s core objectives of promoting political consultation, cooperation for development, language and culture, and civil society were underscored. With 33 observer countries, including 16 represented in Islamabad, CPLP’s global significance and reach were prominently highlighted.
In his concluding remarks, Ambassador da Silva expressed optimism that the audience would relish the cultural offerings from Portugal and Brazil, reflecting the rich heritage and vibrant community of the Portuguese-speaking world.
