ISLAMABAD — Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday categorically rejected the draft of the proposed constitutional amendments, calling them “unacceptable and unviable.”
Speaking to journalists after departing from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser’s residence, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that his party had thoroughly reviewed the amendments and found them insufficient. “We have completely rejected the government’s draft. Endorsing these amendments would be a betrayal of the nation’s trust,” said the JUI-F leader.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman attended a luncheon hosted by Asad Qaiser, where PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and other political figures were present.
The JUI-F chief further criticised the government for sharing the draft with only a few individuals, emphasizing that the document was inadequate. “What was shared was not a draft but something else, and we found it unacceptable,” he added.
When asked about PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Maulana Fazlur Rehman smiled but declined to comment. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also spoke on the occasion, stating that both the PTI and JUI-F had jointly rejected the proposed amendments.
Earlier reports indicated that the government plans to consult with bar associations on the amendments, as legal bodies have expressed opposition to the proposals. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar is expected to brief bar associations in an effort to build consensus.
In a related development, former President of the Supreme Court Bar, Hamid Khan, announced the initiation of a “lawyer movement” starting on September 19 in protest against the proposed constitutional amendments.
