Islamabad – 1 November, 2023: In a grand display of diplomatic goodwill, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, Mitsuhiro Wada, presided over a distinguished reception on Wednesday to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) Day. The event, graced by the esteemed presence of Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ahmed, HI(M), was attended by a diverse assembly, including military officials, esteemed Ministers, parliamentarians, senior members of the Government of Pakistan, distinguished members of the diplomatic community, and prominent figures from the public and private sectors.
In his eloquent remarks, Ambassador Wada expressed his satisfaction at the substantial progress in defense exchanges and cooperation between Japan and Pakistan. He emphasized his belief in the deepening collaboration between the JSDF and Pakistan Armed Forces, alongside grassroots engagement, as a pivotal factor in bolstering the Japan-Pakistan relations.
This celebration also highlighted significant joint activities between the two nations, including the participation of the Maritime Self-Defense Force in the multilateral joint exercise “AMAN23,” hosted by the Pakistani Navy in February. In August, Japan and Pakistan jointly hosted the Preparatory Meeting for the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Islamabad, exemplifying their shared commitment to global peace and security.
Further strengthening the bilateral relations, the 9th Japan-Pakistan Security Dialogue was conducted in Tokyo in September. During this dialogue, an array of critical issues, spanning foreign policy, security policy, and counter-terrorism measures, were comprehensively discussed, reinforcing the diplomatic synergy between the two nations.
The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) demonstrated their dedication to humanitarian efforts as well. In response to the devastating earthquake in 2005 and the floods in 2010 in Pakistan, the JSDF dispatched a helicopter unit as part of the Japan Disaster Relief Team, facilitating the transport of relief supplies and assistance to affected individuals.
In March of this year, in a testament to international solidarity, the JSDF collaborated with the Pakistan Armed Forces and NATO to carry out an airlift operation, aiding the people of Türkiye who had been affected by a destructive earthquake. This operation included the transportation of essential supplies, including tents and winter kits, from Pakistan to Türkiye.
As a delightful addition to the celebration, attendees had the opportunity to savor Japanese cuisine and were treated to a mesmerizing Japanese kendo performance by the embassy staff, reflecting the cultural richness of Japan.
The significance of the Japan Self-Defense Forces Day, originally commemorated on July 1, 1954, with the establishment of the Japan Defense Agency (which was later upgraded to the Ministry in 2007) and the JSDF, has been symbolically shifted to November 1. This adjustment aligns the celebration with the JSDF’s commitment to respond to natural disasters, including the frequent typhoons that afflict Japan during the summer season. The change highlights their readiness to serve not only in defense but also in humanitarian roles.
