The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed annually on November 25. This day aims to raise global awareness about the mental and physical violence faced by women, advocate for their rights, and ensure their protection.
The origins of this day trace back to November 25, 1960, when the Mirabal sisters, activists opposing the dictatorship of Dominican Republic ruler Rafael Trujillo, were brutally murdered on his orders. Since 1981, women’s rights activists have commemorated their anniversary as a day to combat violence against women. Recognizing its significance, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on December 17, 1999.
This day also marks the beginning of **16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence**, culminating on December 10, International Human Rights Day. These 16 days serve as a reminder of the persistent struggles women face globally, despite ongoing efforts.
The primary goal of this observance is to highlight the challenges women encounter, promote measures to combat violence, and advocate for their rights. However, violence against women remains a pervasive issue worldwide, with countless women unable to voice their struggles due to societal or systemic barriers.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is not just a day of remembrance but a call to action. It urges individuals, organizations, and governments to unite in building a world where women can live free from violence, oppression, and inequality.
