Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched an ambitious environmental reform plan under the title “Green Punjab”, aiming to combat pollution, promote large-scale tree plantation, and reduce the use of plastics across the province.

The initiative began with a mass plantation drive across 20 districts, while the next phase will introduce a gradual ban on single-use plastics—particularly plastic bottles.

Speaking at a special ceremony in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said:

“Green Punjab is not just an environmental campaign; it’s a guarantee for a safe and healthy future for the coming generations. We want to see our land, air, and water free from pollution.”

According to the Punjab government, the province aims to plant 10 million trees by the year 2030. To achieve this, schools, colleges, and community centers will be actively engaged in the campaign. A mobile application called the “Green App” has also been launched to allow citizens to upload images and monitor the health and progress of the trees they plant.

On the issue of plastic use, particularly plastic bottles, the Chief Minister hinted at a phased ban in government offices, schools, and hospitals in the coming months. Instead, institutions will be encouraged to switch to refillable bottles, water dispensers, and glass alternatives.

Environmental experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a much-needed step toward sustainability. However, they emphasized that for the campaign to succeed, public awareness, supportive legislation, and effective monitoring mechanisms will be crucial.
