Islamabad (Pakistan News Today): A delegation of the Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) met with Parliamentary Secretary for Commerce Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti at his office in Islamabad to discuss the alarming rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across Pakistan.

The delegation comprised PANAH General Secretary Sanaullah Ghumman, Vice President Ghulam Abbas, and former FBR Commissioner Abdul Hafeez.

Alarming Rise in Non-Communicable Diseases

During the meeting, the delegation presented a detailed briefing on the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Pakistan, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory illnesses. They highlighted that smoking and unhealthy dietary habits are among the leading contributors to the surge in these conditions.

The delegation noted that NCDs are no longer solely a public health concern but have evolved into a significant economic challenge. Rising healthcare expenditures and declining productivity, they said, are placing a heavy burden on the national economy.

Policy Recommendations to Protect Public Health

To address the issue, the PANAH delegation urged the government to take concrete policy measures. They recommended that sugar and ghee be removed from the list of subsidized essential commodities to discourage unhealthy dietary practices.

In addition, the delegation called for a ban on shisha, e-cigarettes, and other emerging tobacco products to safeguard the younger generation from harmful health trends.

PANAH expressed hope that the government would implement effective and sustainable policy interventions to curb the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and promote a healthier, more productive Pakistan.

Parliamentary Secretary Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti listened to the delegation’s proposals and assured his full cooperation and support for initiatives aimed at promoting public health.

“A large portion of Pakistan’s population consists of youth, and it is necessary for the government to take immediate policy action for their healthy future,” he said.

The meeting underscores growing concerns among health advocates regarding the impact of lifestyle-related diseases and the urgent need for preventive health policies in Pakistan.
