European Union High Representative Joseph Bruel strongly condemned the recent statements made by extremist Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, in which he said, “The killing and starvation of two million Gazans can be justified, but the world will not let us do it.”

In a press statement on Wednesday, Bruel stressed that “deliberate starvation of civilians is a war crime,” and that “Smotrich’s statement that it may be justifiable and moral to allow Israel to cause two million civilians to die of starvation is absolutely shameful. It once again shows his contempt for international law.” and the basic principles of humanity.”

He expected the Israeli government “to unequivocally distance itself from Smotrich’s statements, and to submit a full report on the reported acts of torture in Sde Timan prison.”

He stressed his continued urging of Israel to implement the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and binding orders issued by the International Court of Justice, and to ensure full and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid to cover the needs of dozens of civilians, including hundreds of thousands of children, who live in extremely miserable conditions and are exposed to starvation. and disease in Gaza, reiterating his call for an immediate ceasefire.
