Courage Not Compromise: UN Observers Urge Bold Action at Plastics Treaty Negotiations

Courage Not Compromise UN Observers Urge Bold Action at Plastics Treaty Negotiations

**BUSAN, Republic of Korea, November 29, 2024** — Outside the fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting, a coalition of observer organizations called on negotiators to reject weak compromises and embrace courage in finalizing a global plastics treaty.

With just 36 hours remaining, the coalition criticized low-ambition countries for stalling progress and accused pledged leaders of the High Ambition Coalition of failing to act decisively. “A treaty based on voluntary measures will collapse under the weight of the plastic crisis,” they warned, demanding binding global rules across the plastic lifecycle.

The coalition urged negotiators to prioritize substantive solutions over expediency, emphasizing the procedural tools available to bypass roadblocks. “Governments must fight for the treaty they promised, for the health of the planet and future generations,” they declared.

This plea was endorsed by over 150 organizations worldwide, including Greenpeace, WWF, and Break Free From Plastic.
